Where Can Victorian Boat Owners Get Fibreglass Repairs?
Specialist fibreglass boat repair is a narrower trade than general marine servicing. Plenty of workshops across Victoria will service an engine or fit electronics, but structural fibreglass work — cutting out a rotten transom, replacing a stringer system, relaminating a floor — is a different discipline that requires marine-specific materials, controlled preparation and experience reading how a hull has failed.
Boat Repairs Melbourne works exclusively on fibreglass boats. We do not split our attention across automotive, caravan or general composite work, and we do not run a mechanical workshop. Every job that comes through our doors is a fibreglass vessel, which is why boat owners from well beyond Melbourne trailer their boats to our Braeside workshop for structural repairs.
The workshop is led by Harry, a boat builder with 20 years of hands-on experience across runabouts, cruisers, trailer boats and RIBs.
What Fibreglass Repairs Do We Carry Out?
All work is quoted at a fixed price after inspection, so you know the cost before committing to the job or the trip.
- Transom repairs and rebuilds — from $2,500 for a partial repair, $6,500 for a full rebuild, $7,500+ for foam-core construction
- Stringer repairs — from $10,000, the structural backbone of the hull
- Floor repairs and replacement — from $4,500
- Fibreglass hardtop fabrication — from $5,000, built to suit the vessel
- Antifouling — from $2,500, including preparation and application
- Detailing, cut and polish — from $1,000
- Boat painting and gelcoat respray — quoted per vessel
- General fibreglass maintenance — gelcoat care, hull inspections, seasonal preparation
Do You Service Boat Engines, Outboards or Mechanical Systems?
No. This is worth stating plainly, because a large share of people searching for "boat service Victoria" or "boat repair and service Victoria" are looking for mechanical work — an outboard service, a motor rebuild, an electrical fault.
We do not service engines, outboards, sterndrives, electrical systems, plumbing or trailers. Our expertise is the fibreglass hull, deck and structure of the vessel, plus its gelcoat, paint and antifouling. If your boat needs mechanical attention we are happy to point you toward a marine mechanic — but it is not work we take on ourselves, and we would rather say so before you make the drive.
Is It Worth Trailering a Boat from Regional Victoria?
For cosmetic work, usually not — a local detailer will do a perfectly good job. For structural fibreglass work, it often is.
Transom, stringer and floor failures are the repairs most commonly done badly. A transom that is skinned over rather than properly cut out and rebuilt will fail again within a season or two, and the second repair costs more than the first because the surrounding laminate has usually deteriorated in the meantime. These are also the jobs many general marine workshops decline, because they need the space, the materials and the experience to do properly.
Because we quote a fixed price after inspection, you can find out what the job will cost before you commit to it. Send through photographs and a description of the problem and we can usually give you an indicative range before the boat leaves home.
What Should Victorian Boat Owners Know About Antifouling?
Conditions vary considerably around the Victorian coast. Port Phillip Bay's enclosed, nutrient-rich water is aggressive on antifouling, particularly between October and March. Western Port, the Gippsland Lakes and the open coast each behave differently again, and a boat that spends the season on a swing mooring will foul far faster than one that is trailered and washed down after every trip.
Boats that are trailered and stored dry generally need antifouling far less often than permanently moored vessels — in some cases not at all. If you are not sure whether your boat needs recoating, bring it in for an assessment rather than booking the work blind. Read more on our boat antifouling page.
Where Is the Workshop and What Are the Hours?
We are at JV Marine World, 878 Springvale Road, Braeside VIC 3195 — in Melbourne's south-eastern industrial corridor, roughly 25 kilometres south of the CBD, with direct access from the Monash Freeway (M1), EastLink and Peninsula Link. The site has wide driveways and dedicated space for vehicles with trailers.
If most of your driving is within metropolitan Melbourne, our south-east service area page lists travel times from the suburbs we see most often.
Workshop hours: Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 1:00pm.
