What Boat Painting Services Do We Offer?

Boat Repairs Melbourne provides professional boat painting and gelcoat refinishing services for fibreglass vessels. Whether your hull needs a complete colour change, a full respray to restore a faded finish, or a localised repair with colour matching, we handle the entire process in our Braeside workshop — from surface preparation through to final finishing.

Our painting services include:

  • Full hull respray — complete gelcoat or two-pack paint application from waterline to gunwale, including preparation, priming, and multi-coat finishing
  • Partial respray and colour matching — localised repainting for impact damage, repairs, or faded panels, with custom colour mixing to match the existing finish
  • Gelcoat refinishing — restoration of the original gelcoat surface through spraying, rolling, or brushing depending on the area and finish required
  • Topside and deck painting — non-slip deck coatings, cockpit refinishing, and superstructure painting
  • Boot stripe and waterline painting — crisp, professional lines using marine-grade masking and coating systems

When Does a Fibreglass Boat Need Repainting?

Gelcoat is the factory-applied outer surface of a fibreglass boat. Over time — particularly on boats exposed to Melbourne's intense UV and Port Phillip Bay's salt spray — gelcoat oxidises, chalks, and eventually loses its ability to protect the laminate beneath. The progression typically follows this pattern:

  • Stage 1 — Dull finish: The gelcoat loses gloss but can usually be restored by machine compounding and polishing (see our detailing service)
  • Stage 2 — Chalking and colour fade: The surface becomes powdery to the touch and colour has noticeably faded. Compounding may still recover some finish, but results are limited
  • Stage 3 — Crazing and micro-cracking: Fine spider-web cracks appear across the surface. These are cosmetic initially but allow water to reach the laminate if left untreated
  • Stage 4 — Gelcoat failure: The gelcoat is delaminating, flaking, or has worn through to bare fibreglass. At this point, repainting or re-gelcoating is the only option

If your boat is at Stage 3 or 4, a respray is likely the most cost-effective solution. At Stage 2, we'll assess whether compounding can recover enough finish to defer repainting — we won't recommend a respray if polishing will do the job.

How Does the Boat Painting Process Work?

  1. Assessment and quoting — we inspect your hull's current condition, discuss your expectations (colour change, colour match, or restoration), and provide a fixed-price quote
  2. Surface preparation — this is the most important step. We sand, fair, and prepare the entire surface to ensure the new coating bonds properly. Any gelcoat damage, blistering, or structural issues are repaired before painting begins
  3. Priming — an appropriate primer system is applied depending on the coating type (gelcoat respray vs two-pack polyurethane)
  4. Application — multiple coats are applied with appropriate drying and curing time between each. We use professional spray equipment for an even, factory-quality finish
  5. Finishing — final sanding and polishing (if required), masking removal, boot stripe application, and quality inspection

Can You Colour-Match My Boat's Existing Gelcoat?

Yes. We custom-mix gelcoat to match your vessel's existing colour. Exact matching depends on how much the original gelcoat has faded — UV exposure over years changes the colour, so a fresh colour-matched panel may not perfectly match a 15-year-old oxidised surface. In these cases, we advise on the best approach: blending into adjacent panels, repainting a larger section for a seamless result, or accepting a slight variation that will be invisible once the boat is on the water. We're honest about what's achievable before you commit.

Do You Handle Insurance Claim Repairs?

Yes — we handle insurance repairs for paint and gelcoat damage, including impact damage, docking incidents, and storm damage. We do not lodge claims on your behalf, but once you provide us with your claim number we take it from there and liaise directly with the insurer throughout the repair process.

How Do You Book a Painting Assessment?
